To Kill a Mocking Bird - Angelica Pearson

Blog: To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee

The book was set in Alabama, Atticus Finch is the father and he has a job in court and he defends a black man because he thinks the man is falsely accused, Jem Finch is the brother and he calls his sister Scout (her real name is Jean Louise) and Dill is the neighbor just for the summer. Everyone in Scout’s family lived on a landing (owned by her great great, grand father in the civil war) in Maycomb County, Alabama. Her dad moved to Montgomery, Alabama then back to Maycomb. The 1st chapter is about Jem, Jean Louise and Dill growing up together. The 2nd chapter is about when Dill leaves and Jem and Jean Louise have to go to school. Jean’s 1st grade teacher doesn’t like her because she can read. There is one family that some people think are very strange. They are called the Radleys and they don’t talk to anyone and they are locked up all day in their house.

Jem, Jean Louise and Dill think that one of them, Boo Radley is a killer because a lot of chickens and pets are dying. Not many people in Maycomb trust the Radleys because they are locked up all day. In the 3rd chapter there are 2 new characters. One is named Walter Cunningham and his family are farmers. The second new character is named Calpurnia who seems like Jem’s and Scout’s babysitter and housekeeper. She sounds like someone you don’t want to mess with because the book mentions tyranny and unfairness when describing her. There are some odd names in the book like Miss Tuttie and Miss Fruittie. The 4th chapter is about the end of school for Jem and Jean. In the 26th chapter of the book Jem starts 7th grade and Scout starts 3rd grade meaning that only 2 years have gone by in the last 24 chapters of the book. It also was when Jem went out for football but was too skinny and too young so he had to carry the team water buckets and also when Scout was done being afraid of the Radley Place.

In the summer before 2nd grade, Scout spent her summer twilights on Miss Maudie Atkinson’s front porch. Jem and Scout were allowed to play in Miss Maudie’s yard if they kept out of the azaleas. Miss Maudie spent a lot of time outdoors because she didn’t like her house. Her flowers and yard were her prizes. She once attacked a single blade of nut grass that wasn’t even 3 inches high with her own weed killer. Some people take prize in their lawn and garden. Miss Maudie only works in her yard all day because she is a widow and everywhere in her house is an old memory of her deceased husband.

The people of Maycomb County know not to go alone past the Radley place at night or they will have an early funeral. The 2nd grade for Scout was bad at first but she had the same teacher as 1st grade. The only good thing her new school about was she got to stay late with Jem and walked home at about 3:00. Something happened over the summer that was hard to explain but it was weird because it was like someone was there but there was no one around it was either a ghost or a very quick, sneaky person from the town. That winter they had the coldest weather since 1885, and that was over 100 years ago.

There was an old woman named Mrs. Dubose who spent most of her time in bed or in a wheelchair and there was a strange rumor about her- like most of the people in Maycomb County. One of the strange rumors was about a guy who people thought drank a gallon of water a day. Mrs. Dubose was always giving people the evil eye. Whenever Scout said, “Hey, Mrs. Dubose” then she said, “Don’t say hey to me you ugly girl. Say Good afternoon.” “Now that is attitude” is what I thought because Mrs. Dubose was grumpier than my cat. My cat is usually in a bad mood like all old cats but I’ve had her since I was 5 and she still looks at me with anger in her eyes. Some people are just in a bad mood most of the day or all day.

Jem and Scout’s Aunt Alexandra visits in the 13th chapter and the first thing she says is “Put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia.” Her visits to the landing are rare along with people calling Scout “Jean Louise. “

I thought that the book was very great and I have read a lot of good books like The Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter series but this is one of those books that might be made into a great movie and I really loved the ending of the book.
