The Pearl

The story is about an Indian pearl gatherer named Kino along with his wife Juana and his son Coyotito. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and is in dire need of medical attention. Kino and Juana take Coyotito to the center of the town, where the doctor lives. They are turned away because he has nothing to pay the doctor with. They are told “The doctor has gone out,” “He was called to a serious case” (pg. 12). Kino and Juana stood next to each other at the gate for a long time. Just as they were about to leave Kino punched the gate with immense strength and hurt his hand.

The next morning, Kino, Juana and Coyotito go out on Kino’s grandfather’s canoe to go searching for pearls. All the other gatherers had been long gone when Kino and his family set out. They arrived at the oyster bed and saw that the other oyster gatherers were already there. Kino prepared to go down into the oyster bed and search for pearls. He was down there for a long time. He suddenly saw a ledge with an overhang. He saw an oyster that was partially opened. There was a gleam and the clam closed. He quickly went for it. At first he was hesitant to open the clam because he thought it may have just been just a part of a broken shell. Juana convinced Kino to open it. There, in the muscle of the clam, Kino saw the largest pearl he had ever seen. It was as large as a seagull’s egg. They called it the Pearl of the World. Juana told Kino to look at their son. Coyotito’s swelling had gone down.

By the time Kino got back to his village, everyone already knew that Kino found the Pearl of the World. Everyone is gathered in Kino’s house. He looks into the pearl and sees his family’s future. He sees himself and Juana getting married and wearing new white clothes. He sees a rifle. He says that he will get a new rifle with the money he gets from the pearl. He also sees Coyotito in school. He sees him reading books and making numbers. He gets visited by the priest and tells Kino that he is pleased that his first thought of what to do with the money from the pearl is in the act of god

Later, the doctor finds out about the pearl and visits them. He tells them that the venom will attack Coyotito in an hour. He gives him a pill filled with white powder. An hour later Coyotito gets terribly ill and starts to vomit. The doctor comes back and gives Coyotito a drink with a few drops of ammonia in it. It cured him. Kino was suspicious of the doctor and the pill filled with the white powder. He asks Kino how he is going to pay for the treatment. The other villagers tell him that he has a pearl. He pretended that he didn’t know he had a pearl. He asks Kino where it was, watching closely at his eyes hoping that he would glance over to where the pearl was. Kino did just what the doctor thought he would. He glanced over to the corner where he hid the pearl.
Later that night, while he was sleeping, he saw a dark figure in the corner of his house where he hid his pearl. He leaped up and stabbed the figure. The figure escaped from his house. He got hurt while in the struggle. Juana tells Kino that the pearl is evil, but he doesn’t want to give it up.

The next day Kino and his family go to sell the pearl. His brother along with the rest of the town comes with Kino. Kino shows the dealer the pearl. He tells Kino that it’s only worth 1000 pesos. He sees that the dealer is trying to trick him. He gets angry and storms out. The dealer offers 1500 pesos but it doesn’t work. He decided that he wants to sell the pearl at the capital. Later at night, he gets attacked by two people. The next morning Kino catches Juana trying to throw the pearl into the ocean. He beats her and gets the pearl back. On the way back Kino gets attacked by a man. He kills the other man. Juana found him and the dead man. Kino and Juana decide that they must find a safe place to hide. When they get back they find that their canoe has a hole drilled into it and their house burnt. They hide in Kino’s brother’s house and decide to go north. They set out and made sure to cover their tracks. The find out that three people are following them. Kino decides that the only way to get rid of the trackers is to kill them. He sneaks down to their camp while Juana and Coyotito hide in a cave. He manages to kill the trackers but also kills his son. The rifle that one of the trackers had had fired and shot Coyotito. They go back to the village and finally throw the pearl back into the sea.

My Response:
I think this story shows how greed can take over one’s life. There is so much greed in the world. The villagers were at first very happy for Kino that he found such a pearl but shortly after all they could think about was how it would benefit everyone. They respected Kino and were sure that he would help them out. The priest also exhibited greed. He knew a wedding and baptismal weren’t cheap. He was thinking about how he would benefit the church using that pearl. Greed also affected Kino. He slowly became more and more obsessed with the pearl. It became so bad that he actually hurt Juana. She saw the animosity in Kino then. She knew that he had changed. He was becoming an animal. The greed of people can get very bad. Kino wasn’t the only one who resorted to violence. Kino was attacked three times throughout the story all because of the pearl.
Greed can also change not just the person’s life who is being greedy, but everyone around the person also. Because of the Kino’s greediness, he put himself and his family in danger. They had their house burnt down and got a hole in his canoe. They were so fearful that they had to find a safe place to hide. They had to leave their home. Kino had to pay the ultimate price for his greed, while trying to save his family he lost his son. All of these things happened to him because of greed. Greed can take over your life and ruin it. The lesson to be learned from this story and that is to not let greed blind you. If you do you will end up paying the price.

To Kill a Mocking Bird - Angelica Pearson

Blog: To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee

The book was set in Alabama, Atticus Finch is the father and he has a job in court and he defends a black man because he thinks the man is falsely accused, Jem Finch is the brother and he calls his sister Scout (her real name is Jean Louise) and Dill is the neighbor just for the summer. Everyone in Scout’s family lived on a landing (owned by her great great, grand father in the civil war) in Maycomb County, Alabama. Her dad moved to Montgomery, Alabama then back to Maycomb. The 1st chapter is about Jem, Jean Louise and Dill growing up together. The 2nd chapter is about when Dill leaves and Jem and Jean Louise have to go to school. Jean’s 1st grade teacher doesn’t like her because she can read. There is one family that some people think are very strange. They are called the Radleys and they don’t talk to anyone and they are locked up all day in their house.

Jem, Jean Louise and Dill think that one of them, Boo Radley is a killer because a lot of chickens and pets are dying. Not many people in Maycomb trust the Radleys because they are locked up all day. In the 3rd chapter there are 2 new characters. One is named Walter Cunningham and his family are farmers. The second new character is named Calpurnia who seems like Jem’s and Scout’s babysitter and housekeeper. She sounds like someone you don’t want to mess with because the book mentions tyranny and unfairness when describing her. There are some odd names in the book like Miss Tuttie and Miss Fruittie. The 4th chapter is about the end of school for Jem and Jean. In the 26th chapter of the book Jem starts 7th grade and Scout starts 3rd grade meaning that only 2 years have gone by in the last 24 chapters of the book. It also was when Jem went out for football but was too skinny and too young so he had to carry the team water buckets and also when Scout was done being afraid of the Radley Place.

In the summer before 2nd grade, Scout spent her summer twilights on Miss Maudie Atkinson’s front porch. Jem and Scout were allowed to play in Miss Maudie’s yard if they kept out of the azaleas. Miss Maudie spent a lot of time outdoors because she didn’t like her house. Her flowers and yard were her prizes. She once attacked a single blade of nut grass that wasn’t even 3 inches high with her own weed killer. Some people take prize in their lawn and garden. Miss Maudie only works in her yard all day because she is a widow and everywhere in her house is an old memory of her deceased husband.

The people of Maycomb County know not to go alone past the Radley place at night or they will have an early funeral. The 2nd grade for Scout was bad at first but she had the same teacher as 1st grade. The only good thing her new school about was she got to stay late with Jem and walked home at about 3:00. Something happened over the summer that was hard to explain but it was weird because it was like someone was there but there was no one around it was either a ghost or a very quick, sneaky person from the town. That winter they had the coldest weather since 1885, and that was over 100 years ago.

There was an old woman named Mrs. Dubose who spent most of her time in bed or in a wheelchair and there was a strange rumor about her- like most of the people in Maycomb County. One of the strange rumors was about a guy who people thought drank a gallon of water a day. Mrs. Dubose was always giving people the evil eye. Whenever Scout said, “Hey, Mrs. Dubose” then she said, “Don’t say hey to me you ugly girl. Say Good afternoon.” “Now that is attitude” is what I thought because Mrs. Dubose was grumpier than my cat. My cat is usually in a bad mood like all old cats but I’ve had her since I was 5 and she still looks at me with anger in her eyes. Some people are just in a bad mood most of the day or all day.

Jem and Scout’s Aunt Alexandra visits in the 13th chapter and the first thing she says is “Put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia.” Her visits to the landing are rare along with people calling Scout “Jean Louise. “

I thought that the book was very great and I have read a lot of good books like The Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter series but this is one of those books that might be made into a great movie and I really loved the ending of the book.

to kill a mockingbird--by Dylan Snyder

A young girl named Scout Finch lives in the quite town of Maycomb. She lives with her brother, Jem, and her father, Atticus. this story takes place in the 1930's during the great depression. Atticus happens to be a lawyer, so their family is in okay shape. Scout and Jem one day befriend a boy named Dill. He moves to Matcomb in the summer to live with his Aunt. The three become best friends. One day Dill becomes intrested with a spooky house down the street. The person who lives in the house is Nathan Radley. He has a brother with the nickname "Boo". Boo has lived in that house for a while without going outside of it. The three thought that was mysterious. They have heard many stories of Boo and wanted to find out if some were true. They heard boo was in jail for a while. soon, boos dad died, so they took him out of jail, and his brother nathan came to live with him.

The next summer, they discover that somebody is leaving gifts in a knothole from time to time. They thought that the gift leaver could be Boo. They think that he saw them pass by the house with looks of intrest and wonder. He left things there to let them know that he is still around. The three thought it was a possibility that Boo was just misunderstood and wasn't actually scary.

Soon a case comes around that a black man, Tom Robison, has raped a white girl. Atticus is a lawyer and is defending Tom. Maycomb is a very prejudcice white town. So most people are mad at, or have lost all respect for him, for defending a black person. Even his kids get bugged for it at school. Atticus runs into many conflicts while defending Tom. He also put his familt in danger. Atticus sat infront of Tom's jail cell to protect him so people cannot hurt or kill him. while he is doing that, he is leaving his family alone putting them in more danger.

The trial finnally came. The case goes on for a while, arguing back and forth. In the end, Atticus clearly wins. But the prejudice judge over looks that and sends Tom to jail. Atticus didn't want the kids to be there. But, the kids snuck in and watched it in the black people section. So, Tom gets sent to another prison. He later tries to escape and gets shot and killed. Atticus soon recieved the news that this happened. He felt really terrible about this. he passed the news on to Tom's family. they also fely bad. People later that day and days after still were mean to him and gave him dirty looks. Bob Ewell goes after Jem and Scout. He follows them home from school with a knife. He attacks Jem and the result was knockedout unconcious, and a broken arm. before he could get to Scout, a mysterious man stopped him. the stranger tackled him and Bob fell on his knife and died. the man brought Jem back to the house. Scout went back to see who it was, it turned out to be Boo. Boo was actually a very good person, he was just misunderstood.

REACTION TO THE BOOK

there were many examples of evil over good, and good over evil. A good example of evil over good was when everyone knew that Tom was innocent, they still sentenced him because he was black. An example of good over evil, was when Boo saved Scout and Jem at the end of the book. Both of those people were very misunder stood. Tom didn't do anything wrong. He was very mis-judged. Just because his skin is a different color he should be falsey sentenced? that doesn't make any sense. Boo, also was a very good person. and was also very mis-judged. Just because he never comes outside means he is a big mean monster? He saved both of the kid's lives at the end.

The whole thing about the trial was unfair. Just because he is black he got charged. if he was white he wouldn't of been charged. The book has taught me alot about Americas rascit past. people aren't different because of there skin color. Skin is only skin deep, it doesn't even matter.

But, i stil don't understand why that person was leaving things in the tree. how did he know they would look there? and who was it that was doing that? they thought it was Boo, but it never said who it was. And why did he patch the hole?

Overall, i thik that the book was a pretty good book. It was pretty intresting. during the court-scene, i didnt want to put it down. i wanted to know what was going to happen next, how it was going to end up. And the ending of the court-scene was good. Some parts were a little wierd. like the gifts in the tree part. And the Ending how Boo just went in the house. And how Atticus would leave his kids alone every night to go sit by the jail door. And how Jem and Scout called their dad Atticus instead of Dad.

The Pearl

THE PEARL
Colby Curtis
March 31,2008

The story focuses on a family of three. The father’s name is Kino and the mother’s name is Juana. They live in a grass shack near the ocean.
In the beginning of the story, their child, named Coyotito, gets stung by a scorpion. The poison from the scorpion is very potent and his parents know that it could be life threatening. They ask the doctor to help their child. The doctor won’t help them because he knows that they don’t have any money. He looks down on them because they are Indians.
When they’re sent home by the doctor, Kino decides to go pearl hunting. Kino dives down to the bottom several times and finds a few small oysters and puts them in the boat. The rest of his family comes with him and helps him gather the oysters when he puts them in the boat. Kino then dives down again, when something shiny catches his eye. He looks under a small ledge and finds a huge oyster that he carries up to the boat.
When he gets in the boat, he starts opening the oyster shells. He begins opening the small ones first, to save the best for last. The small ones didn’t have any pearls in them so he opens the big one he found. He grabs his knife and sticks it into the shell and wrenches it open. What he sees amazes him because he found the pearl of the world.
By the time they reach shore, Coyotito begins to show signs that he is getting better. Kino and Juana still want to take him to see the doctor to make his recovery “official.” The doctor gives Coyotito some medicine that makes him cough violently and throw up. He says that he will come back to see how Coyotito is doing. An hour later, he comes back and says Coyotito will be just fine.
The next day Kino goes into town to sell his magnificent pearl. By this time, word has gotten around town that Kino found the pearl of the world. When he gets to the pearl traders, there is a group of people following him to see how much he gets for his pearl. The pearl trader takes the pearl from Kino and scans it. After he scans it, he puts it back into the tray it was in. He tells Kino that it is only worth 1000 pesos. Kino is in shock and says it is worth at least 50000 pesos. The other Pearl traders offers him even less money. Kino thinks he getting swindled. Kino plans to take the pearl to the capital and see how much he can get for it there.
That night, Juana tries to get rid of the pearl by throwing it back into the ocean, but Kino stops her and takes the pearl. On the way back to their house, Kino gets attacked and the pearl gets knocked away from him. Kino grabs his knife and stabs the attacker, killing him. Right then, he gets thrown down and gets injured.
When he and Juana get back to the house, it is ablaze. Having killed a man, Kino knew that they had to leave. They decided to travel to the capital to see how much they could get for the pearl.
On there journey, they are chased by two trackers and a man on a horse. They stopped in the same place Kino and his family did to rest for the night. Kino’s family is well hidden in a cave on the cliff side.
Kino knew that the stalkers would eventually find them, so he decides to attack when most of them where sleeping. He goes down the cliff side and first kills the man on watch with his knife and grabs his rifle, then shoots the two others. Before Kino is able to attack the person holding the rifle, that man shoots at what he thinks is a coyote but is actually Coyotito, killing him.
I think this story expresses greed as a destructive force. Kino keeps thinking of what he was going to buy with all the money he thinks he is going to make. “Kino looked into his pearl, and Juana cast her eyelashes down and arranged her shawl to cover her face so that her excitement could not be seen. And in the incandescence of the pearl the pictures formed of the thing Kino’s mind had considered in the past and had given up as impossible. In the pearl he saw Juana, Coyotito, and himself standing and kneeling at the high altar, and they were being married now that they could pay. He spoke softly, “We will be married in the church”” (page #24)
Kino wouldn’t listen to his wife when she told him to get rid of the pearl. Juana even tries to steel the pearl from Kino while he is sleeping, and tries to throw it back into the ocean. Kino caught up to her and struck her in the face. Kino gets attack several times during the story. After every time his wife says to get rid of it, and Kino says that it will be all right and they should just sell it.
“It will destroy us all” Juana cried, “even our son.” “Hush,” Kino said. “Do not speak any more. In the morning I will sell the pearl.” (page#39) Kino puts his family’s safety aside because he doesn’t want to get rid of the pearl. With so many bad things happening because of the pearl, this book is emphasizing that greed is a destructive force.

To kill a mockingbird: by bree martin

While reading Harper Lee's novel " To kill a mockingbird", we see what the life is like in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama. Which is filled with prejudice people. We see this through a young girls eyes. The novel is based on the author's observations of her family, neighboors, and hometown. This story takes place in the 1930's, and takes place in three years of the Great Depression. The text also talks about: the triumph of good over evil, the triumph of evil over good, and the scourge of social inequality. The narrator of this story is a tomboy, named Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. She lived with her brother "Jem", her father "Atticus", and their cook "Calpurnia". Atticus was a middle aged lawyer. As the story goes on Scout and Jem befriend a boy named Charles Baker "Dill" Harris, who stay with his aunt for the summer. After Jem tells stories to Dill about a man named Arthur "Boo" Radley, the three children become interested in it what Jem and other people say about Boo were really true. The rumors said about him were that he was crazy, and that one day he was usng scissors to make a scrapbook, and then he went over by his father and stabbed him in the leg and then went back to scrapbooking. Because of this his father impriosined him in the bottom of the courthouse. When his father died boo was sent back to the house where Nathan Radley (Boo's brother) came to live with him, so that he would stay inside the house. This rumor and many others made the children even more eager to get Boo out of his house, and to see how he really was. In the following summer Jem and Scout find that someone is leaving them small gifts in a knothole in a tree outside of the Radley's place. They wondered wo it was. They thought the "secret giver" could be Boo. For they thought that Boo had seen them pass by his house, and saw acts of wonder and mischief so then he gave them gifts to let them know that he was there, and not dead. This made the children think Boo was simply misunderstood and actually a really nice person. As the book progresses we take a look at "Atticus Finch" (Scout and Jems father). Atticus being a lawyer, was assigned to defend and protect a black man named "Tom Robinson", who was accused of raping a 19 yeaar old girl named "Mayella Ewell". The fact that Atticus (a wite man) was defending a black man "Tom Robinison" made many of Maycombs prejiduce citizens disaprove. This issue led to Atticus's children to be in the center of rude remarks and whispers. While defending Tom, Atticus runs into some conflict. For Atticus sat in front of Tom Robinison's jail door so that no one could harm him, but by doing that at the same time he was putting his family in even more danger. As the weeks past the trial came nearer. When it finally was present, Atticus did not invite the kids or want them to be present in the event. Because of this, Scout, Jem, and Dill snuck into the courtroom, and sat in the colored balcony and watched secretivley. The trial begins when Mr. Underwood is called to the stand, then followed by Bob Ewell (Mayella's father, a drunk and as the book later tells us the cause of the bruises, and the pain afflicted on Mayella, then followed by Mayella, and last Tom. Atticus could tell by Mayella's tone in voice, and the way she answered the questions, that she was lying, and that Tom was innocent, and her father beat her when he was drunk. but even with the evidence given, that specifically told why Tom was innocent, and why he did not or couldn't have raped her the jury still convicted him. As the trial ended Jem, Scout, and Dill were upset, and thought that Tom would've been not-guilty, and wouldn't be charged of anything. A day after the trial Tom was sent to another prison, and was to get ready for another trial that would've tooken place, for that night grave news was sent. Atticus was given the news that Tom had been shot and killed, for he tried to escape the prison and acted like a crazy man. This news made Atticus feel hopeless and sad. For after he had to pass the news onto Tom's family, and he did so. On his way back home, Atticus bumped into Bob Ewell, and Bob spits in Atticus's face. For he had been humiliatedby Atticus in the trial. Bob's actions had no affect on him so he drove away. Bob tried to let his anger out by trying to break in to the judges house, the Robinson's house, and don't forget, tried to kill Jem and Scout. Bob followed Scout and Jem on their way home from a school event, and carried a knife. For when he attacked them the kids did not know who it was, for it was dark anf late. Jem was attacked first and what resulted into him having a broken arm, and being knocked out unconsciencely. Before Ewell can get to Scout, he gets stopped by a stranger but at the same time a savior to the kids. The man pushes Ewell to the side and resulted in to Ewell falling on his knife and killing himself. Scout doe not see the mans face but sees him carrying Jem to their house. After when Scout gets home she finds Jem in his bed,and the man behind Jem's bedroom door. She then asks him if he was Boo Radley, and he nodds his head. Booo might've been quiet but he was a savior and a rescuer and a hero to Jem and Scout. He like Tom Robinson was simply misunderstood.

Reflection #1:

I think the title of th ebook relates with the story because as Atticus said "It was a sin to kill a mockingbird, because don't do anything but make music for us to enjoy, they don't eat peoples gardens, don't nest in unwanted places, don't do one thing but sing their hearts out". (Metaphorically) I think the mockingbirds in the book are: Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson. For Tom Robinson was a mockingbird because he didn't do anything bad. For he was falsey accused of raping Mayella. Even though the evidence was confident and made sense, the jury convicted him because of his color. For a white mans word always over-ruled a black mans in that time.
Arthur Radley A.K.A. Boo Radley was a mockingbird, because his father was known as a foot washer which was a person that belived that everyone was going to hell. Because of Boo's father people thought that Boo believed in that to. But a s the book later explains Boo was actually misunderstood, and actually a really nice, kind, giving, protective person.

Reflection #2:

While reading the book we read that social hierachy in Maycomb mattered for most people. I think in the book, the Finches stand on the top of Maycombs social hiearchy, and the black community at the bottom. For as i said before, a white man always overrules a black mans at that time. For an example of this is in Tom Robinsons trial. For the jury took Bob Ewells (a drunken white man) word, then a polite, innocent black man. Another example of this is in our present day. For if you are homeless ou are at the bottom of the society, but if you're the president you're at the top of society. The author of this book "Harper Lee" makes us see the role of class status, and prejiduec through a childs eyes.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Angelica

To Kill a Mockingbird-Ben Steuri

skip to main skip to sidebar
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel about a family living in Maycomb County in Southern Alabama. The father's name was Atticus Finch. He was a lawyer who worked for the state. His son’s name was Jeremy (Jem) Finch and his daughter’s name was Jean Louise (Scout) Finch. Growing up in a very confederate state, the family owned an African American house slave named Calpurnia (Cal). During the summers, a boy from Mississippi named Charles Baker (Dill) Harris would go to Maycomb to stay with his Aunt and spend time with the Finch siblings.

The Radleys who were neighbors of the Finch family were always up to strange things and would rarely ever come out of their house. Mr. Radley had two children, Arthur (Boo) Radley and his younger brother Nathan Radley. It was said that years before Jem Finch was born, Boo stabbed his father in the thigh. Dill heard this story and wanted to know more about these neighbors. They were thinking of ways to make Boo come out so they could see what he looked like. The summer went by fast for them and before they knew it, they were back in school. Scout was a very strong reader and writer, but her teacher, Miss Caroline, did not want Scout to continue her progress at home. Her father, Atticus, had been teaching her to read and write, and although Miss Caroline said to stop, he refused and continued teaching Scout at home. Scout then developed a very negative attitude towards her teacher.

When summer came around again, as usual, Dill made his annual trip to Maycomb. Dill continued being curious about the Radley family. A bet was made by Dill to see if Jem was brave enough to run across the yard of the Radley Place and touch the house. For several days this bet was bothering Jem until he finally found the courage to do it. Jem later tells Scout that while he was approaching the house, he heard strange laughter coming from inside the house. Before the summer ended, the children made one last attempt to try and see Boo. Late at night when the Finch siblings told Atticus that they would walk Dill to his Aunts’ house, they actually snuck over to the Radley Place and got up on to the back porch. As soon as Jem got up on the deck they saw the silhouette of a man walking towards them. They immediately began to run away. Dill and Scout made it over the fence but when Jem tried to jump the fence, his pants got caught and so therefore he quickly took them off and continued running. Just then they heard a gun shot coming from the Radley Place. The entire neighborhood came out to the Radley’s house to see what the problem was. Jem, Dill and Scout did not want to seem suspicious, so they quickly made their way back to the Radley’s house without being caught. Later that night, Jem went back to the fence to get his pants, but instead of it being all tangled up and torn, they were nicely folded and the holes were patched up. Someone unknown to Jem was expecting him to retrieve his pants, but this person remained a mystery to Jem. Another mysterious event happened whereby there was a bad fire that had burnt down a neighbor’s house. Scout and Jem were told by their dad to wait outside of their house while he attempts to help the neighbor. While standing outside in the freezing cold, someone placed a blanket on Scout without her even knowing and she was pretty sure it was Boo.

As the new school year began, Scout was teased by her schoolmates that her father was a “n****r lover" and that he would be “defending a n****r” in court. When she later confronted her father, he told her that this was true and that it was his job to represent and defend his client. The man he would be defending was named Tom Robinson and he was being accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Atticus told Scout that the penalty of this offense would be the electric chair. While spending a night in prison, a group of men had made an attempt to kill Tom. Luckily, Atticus was spending the night outside of the prison to protect Tom from such an event. While the men show up, Jem, Scout, and Dill snuck down to the prison and watched their father. At last, Atticus and the children were able to persuade the men from attacking Tom Robinson. When the court session began again, Mr. Robinson was being treated unfairly because of his race. Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father, was getting very angry with the fact that Atticus was helping this black man in court. Atticus was making the Ewells look very bad by giving plenty evidence that Tom did not rape Mayella. Tom eventually lost in court and while trying to escape the prison, he was shot and killed. Bob attacked Scout and Jem because their father was opposing him in court, and left Jem with a badly broken arm. Boo Radley jumps out, and quickly gets involved, saving Jem and Scout, and ends up killing Bob Ewell.

Reaction

An example in this text of the triumph of evil over good would be when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella when she was never actually raped. Though she did have wounds, it was actually Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell, who beat Mayella up for trying to flirt with Tom. The incident was taken to court and Tom was then found guilty of the crime because he was black, and was given the death penalty. Tom was a good man and the evil deed of Bob’s lying triumphed over Tom. An example of the triumph of good over evil would be when Boo Radley came to the Finch’s rescue and killed Bob who was attacking them. Bob was once again doing an evil deed and Boo stepped in to save Jem and Scout’s lives. Another example of this triumph would be when the Scout invited Walter Cunningham to her house for lunch. Walter’s family was very poor and would never be able to pay someone in cash. It would always be in services or homemade stuff. Instead of having Walter starve there while everyone else stuffed their faces, Scout did the right thing and offered him food. Overall, I think this book was a good example of how evil sometimes can overcome the good in someone. Although this is a fiction book, I am pretty sure that cases like this have happened and continue to happen. Unfortunately, innocent people are sometimes accused of stuff they didn’t do based on their diversities. Luckily, these days we have laws to prevent most of these kinds of prejudice acts. The title To Kill a Mockingbird is a metaphor that describes how such an innocent man as Tom Robinson can be killed for absolutely no reason. Why would anyone want to kill a mockingbird? Like Tom, it has done nothing wrong.
